Print Reading and Engineering Drawing Practices Textbook

This workbook and workshop was designed to be a short course on the fundamentals of Print Reading and Engineering Drawing Practices. It is best suited for entry level engineers, designers, drafters or machinists, quality control and inspection personnel. The material presented in this workbook may also be used as a “refresher course” in the current ASME standards used in the interpretation or preparation of engineering drawings for buyers and purchasing personnel.

The objective of this workbook/reference guide is to reduce a comprehensive series of drawing standards into simple and digestible segments to provide the individual with a better understanding of these fundamental practices used in the preparation or interpretation of engineering drawings.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Engineering drawings are prepared to the ASME Y14 Series of Standard Drawing and Drafting Practices, accepted industry wide practices, and individual company standards. These standards establish uniform practices for anyone who either prepares drawings or reads the print with accepted methods to interpret the information on the drawing.

This program contains fourteen units covering the basic requirements used in the preparation of or the interpretation (print reading) of engineering drawings. Workshop exercises are contained within each unit where applicable. Solutions to these problems are in a separate solutions manual. Critiquing your company’s engineering drawings and others during this workshop is a outstanding opportunity to increase the quality and readability of your own engineering drawings.

GeoTol Pro Fundamentals Online – Level 1

Level 1 Online Course Details

The Level 1 program is the first part of a professional level course that provides a solid introduction to geometric tolerancing. It is delivered per the ASME Y14.5-2009 standard and consists of 8 interactive units. This program has been presented and refined over the past 30 years and covers what personnel need to know in order to work in an engineering, manufacturing and quality environment on a daily basis. The program is designed to build knowledge in steps, keeping the students engaged all the way through. This program is great for people new to the subject or those looking for a refresher course.

The units start with a series of video clips of both Al Neumann and Scott Neumann teaching the lesson. Al and Scott trade off, sportscaster style, teaching the subject by talking about the engineering drawings, showing computer animations and using wood and plastic models to demonstrate inspection techniques. In between the video clips, the students are asked interactive questions on screen. The questions range from multiple choice, drag and drop, or hot spot buttons. After the questions, Al and Scott then provide the answers before continuing to the next topic. The student’s grades are tracked and reported at the end of each unit.

The students may follow along with the lessons in their GeoTol Pro workbook with pages that match the slides on screen. The 6 month access also allows the students to go back and review both the video clips and questions to reinforce the concepts as needed. See the program outline for the topics covered.

The program starts with Unit 1 showing a basic introduction to the symbols, terms and theory of GD&T along with practical demonstrations on basic measurement procedures. In Unit 2, the students will learn the important concept of the Limits of Size (Rule #1) and the problems with the old plus/minus tolerancing to locate features. With models and exercises in Unit 3, the students will learn basic datum reference frames and the concepts of profile, position and how to correctly apply and interpret the MMC, LMC and RFS feature modifiers. Inspection procedures and inspection reporting shown in Unit 4 reinforce the concepts of position and feature modifiers. Virtual size calculations are shown in Unit 5 to lay the ground work for functional gauging, MMB modifiers and calculating position values in the Level 2 training. Unit 6 continues into more complicated datum reference frames and illustrates how datums constrain a part’s degrees of freedom. After this Level 1 training, the student will have a solid grasp on the three major concepts in geometric tolerancing, datum reference frames, position, and profile. With the included units 10 and 11, this program also covers the form and orientation tolerances in depth. See Level 2 for the more advanced topics covered.

The 60 day access also allows the students to go back and review both the video clips and questions to reinforce the concepts as needed. See the program outline for the topics covered.

GeoTol Applications and Tolerance Stacks

This text is broken into two major sections: Tolerance Stacks and Design Applications.

Tolerance Stacks

The stacks section is contained in the first 6 units of this text, and is designed to teach students the fundamental principles of tolerance stacks.  The student will learn a variety of stack procedures, beginning with simple linear stacks on detail parts in units 1 and 2, and migrating to linear assembly stacks in Unit 3.  Unit 4 begins with axial detail stacks, and moves on to complex axial assembly stacks in unit 5.  Orientation tolerance stacks are covered in unit 6 and melded together with axial boundary assembly stacks to provide the participant with a complete understanding of the stacks process.  Students will use this knowledge to perform tolerance stacks to ensure the design criteria is met in the application case study problems.

Design Applications

The applications section is a total of 10 units, (7 thru 17). Unit 7 begins with a quick review of the fundamentals of geometric tolerancing and a few basic applications of geometric tolerancing on simple detail parts. The following units are a series of case study examples, where the students will learn to establish datum reference frames and apply geometric tolerancing to a variety of parts.  There are a multitude of simple to complex sheet metal, cast, turned and milled parts, and welded assemblies. The case study examples start out simple, but generally grow in complexity as the units progress.  In the beginning of each unit there will be an introduction explaining the issue at hand and the necessary functional requirements to be met.  Some examples provide detailed explanation, and in other instances, examples are incomplete by intent to make the problem less complex. After the parts are toleranced to achieve functional requirements, there are tolerance analysis stacks and reallocation exercises the student must perform to ensure the parts meet the established requirements detailed in each introduction.

How to use this book

This book provides complete flexibility in the learning process. Students can use this book to learn only tolerance stacks, only design applications or a combination of both. The tolerance stacks sections must be completed sequentially in order from unit 1 to 6.  The applications section may be taken in any order, applying tolerance to sheet metal, machined parts, simple or complex problems. To make the learning experience exciting, it is recommend the student alternately completes a lesson in the stacks units, and afterwards, solves a case study problem from the applications units. This format provides variety in the lessons and provides practical applications at the same time.  The student can work problems in any order in the application section.  In order to solve the stacks problems in the case study examples, there will be prerequisites from stacks units the student must first complete. The prerequisites for the stack exercises are shown after the title on the top of the exercise page, and following the title page of each application. There is a solutions manual available.
