General Description

A must study for designers, engineers, manufacturing, quality and shop floor personnel. Prerequisite; Geometric Tolerancing Fundamentals Program.

The Geometric Tolerancing Stacks Training Program is designed to educate students on how to evaluate, read and interpret geometric tolerances on linear and axial assemblies. This program uses physical models and color animated computer graphics to deliver the message. The instruction is reinforced with student hands-on exercises consisting of a variety of mechanical case studies on both details and assemblies. The problems are in a combination of metric and the inch system. This program provides simple easy to use common sense formulas using addition and subtraction to solve the most complex problems. It gives tips and suggestions on form, orientation and location tolerance variations due to a variety of manufacturing processes.

To do axial stacks this program it uses the “boundary method” and the evaluation of joints rather that the traditional vector wall to wall method. procedure evaluates joints in an assembly and dramatically simplifies the procedure. It cuts in half the process of evaluating tolerance stacks with feature and datum modifiers. The stacks and tolerance allocation become very intuitive and easy to understand.

Tolerance stacks are an important toolused to evaluate the variable features and dimensions of a single part or an assembly of parts. Tolerance stacks are used in the calculation of fits and fit-ups, tolerance accumulation/allocation, datum selection and the use of datum and feature modifiers. Stack exercises include examples of form, orientation, profile and position tolerances along with datum modifiers at RFS and MMC. These basic tolerance stack and analysis principles can be used individually or in combination on simple or very complex examples. The students usually use calculators but may also use laptops. A customized Excel spread sheet accompanies the program. All the boundaries are calculated manually prior to using the spreadsheet or viewing the solutions. The program generates a lot of questions, conversation and student involvement. The exercises build the knowledge and improves participant’s confidence in properly applying and interpreting geometric tolerancing. Tolerances should not be “picked from the air”. This course provides simple easy methods to select, evaluate and reallocate tolerances.

Upon completion of the course the students will be able to complete linear and axial stacks and analysis on details and assemblies. Students will understand how and why tolerances accumulate. The students will have a vastly improved understanding of how to apply and evaluate geometric tolerances.

As an option, this Applications program can be taught simultaneously with the Geometric Tolerancing Stacks and Analysis Program. A lesson in the Stacks with an alternating lesson in the Applications will provide variety in the lessons and practical applications at the same time. There can be a level 1 and level 2 in this combination.

The video and CD-ROM materials contain a variety of computer color animated graphics, video clips and models which allow a leader to present the concepts. This program is available on-site, in workbook form, DVD/video and a Leader led PowerPoint CD-ROM. Wood and plastic models of the details and assemblies are available. The Excel spreadsheet for the stacks is included.
