General Description
Prerequisite; Geometric Fundamentals. In order to solve the tolerance stacks and reallocation exercises in this program the student should also have completed Geometric Tolerancing Stacks and Analysis Program.
The Geometric Applications with Stacks Training Program is designed to educate students on how to properly interpret and apply geometric tolerancing to parts and assemblies.
This program contains a short review and eight units which contain a variety of problems. Student teams learn to apply geometric tolerancing to drawings of mating parts and assemblies by solving case study problems according to strict predetermined functional requirements. The problems are in a combination of metric and the inch system.
Datum reference frames must be established along with necessary application of MMC. RFS and LMC modifiers, form, orientation, profile and positional tolerances.
Tolerance values are not “picked out of the air”. Realistic tolerances must be calculated and applied by the student according predetermined functional requirements. In the initial stages of the problem, the tolerances are educated estimated guesses. As the problem progresses the students must perform tolerance stacks to assure specification are met and tolerances are reallocated based on realistic capabilities.
Problems are discussed, critiqued and solutions are provided based on reasonable functional assumptions and manufacturing capabilities. Discussion includes information on inspection verification techniques and manufacturing concerns.
A student workbook follows along with the program and contains the case study exercises. The exercises consist of a variety of mechanical assemblies which include machined, turned, sheet metal welded assemblies and molded parts that allow the participants to practice and test their skills. The students must apply geometric tolerancing along with realistic tolerances to detail parts and assemblies. Mechanical tolerance stacks and analysis must be performed on linear and axial assemblies. The effect of datum selection, datum and feature modifiers and the allocation of tolerances keeps everyone involved. The program is loaded with hands-on exercises The calculation of fits and fit-ups, and tolerance analysis are all part of the program. Stack exercises include examples of form, orientation, profile and position tolerances along with feature and datum modifiers at RFS, MMC and LMC. The program generates a lot of questions, conversation and student involvement. The exercises builds the participants confidence in properly applying and interpreting geometric tolerancing.
Upon completion of the course the students will vastly improve their ability to interpret and apply geometric tolerances on engineering drawings of parts and assemblies according to functional design requirements. The students will be able to establish datum reference frames, calculate, analyze and reallocate geometric tolerances based on functional requirements and manufacturing capabilities. They will also have knowledge of the verification and inspection procedures to achieve conformance.
As an option, this Applications program can be presented simultaneously with the Geometric Tolerancing Stacks and Analysis Program. A lesson in the “Stacks Program” with an alternating lesson in the “Applications Program” will provide variety in the lessons and practical applications at the same time. There can be a level 1 and level 2 in this combination.
This program is available on-site, in workbook form, DVD/video and a Leader led PowerPoint CD-ROM. Plastic models of the details and assemblies are available. The Excel spreadsheet for the stacks is included.
