Print Reading and Engineering Drawing Practices Textbook

This workbook and workshop was designed to be a short course on the fundamentals of Print Reading and Engineering Drawing Practices. It is best suited for entry level engineers, designers, drafters or machinists, quality control and inspection personnel. The material presented in this workbook may also be used as a “refresher course” in the current ASME standards used in the interpretation or preparation of engineering drawings for buyers and purchasing personnel.

The objective of this workbook/reference guide is to reduce a comprehensive series of drawing standards into simple and digestible segments to provide the individual with a better understanding of these fundamental practices used in the preparation or interpretation of engineering drawings.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Engineering drawings are prepared to the ASME Y14 Series of Standard Drawing and Drafting Practices, accepted industry wide practices, and individual company standards. These standards establish uniform practices for anyone who either prepares drawings or reads the print with accepted methods to interpret the information on the drawing.

This program contains fourteen units covering the basic requirements used in the preparation of or the interpretation (print reading) of engineering drawings. Workshop exercises are contained within each unit where applicable. Solutions to these problems are in the back of the book. Critiquing your company’s engineering drawings and others during this workshop is a outstanding opportunity to increase the quality and readability of your own engineering drawings.

GeoTol Pro Fundamentals Online – Level 1

Level 1 Online Course Details

The Level 1 program is the first part of a professional level course that provides a solid introduction to geometric tolerancing. It is delivered per the ASME Y14.5-2009 standard and consists of 8 interactive units. This program has been presented and refined over the past 30 years and covers what personnel need to know in order to work in an engineering, manufacturing and quality environment on a daily basis. The program is designed to build knowledge in steps, keeping the students engaged all the way through. This program is great for people new to the subject or those looking for a refresher course.

The units start with a series of video clips of both Al Neumann and Scott Neumann teaching the lesson. Al and Scott trade off, sportscaster style, teaching the subject by talking about the engineering drawings, showing computer animations and using wood and plastic models to demonstrate inspection techniques. In between the video clips, the students are asked interactive questions on screen. The questions range from multiple choice, drag and drop, or hot spot buttons. After the questions, Al and Scott then provide the answers before continuing to the next topic. The student’s grades are tracked and reported at the end of each unit.

The students may follow along with the lessons in their GeoTol Pro workbook with pages that match the slides on screen. The 60 day access also allows the students to go back and review both the video clips and questions to reinforce the concepts as needed. See the program outline for the topics covered.

The program starts with Unit 1 showing a basic introduction to the symbols, terms and theory of GD&T along with practical demonstrations on basic measurement procedures. In Unit 2, the students will learn the important concept of the Limits of Size (Rule #1) and the problems with the old plus/minus tolerancing to locate features. With models and exercises in Unit 3, the students will learn basic datum reference frames and the concepts of profile, position and how to correctly apply and interpret the MMC, LMC and RFS feature modifiers. Inspection procedures and inspection reporting shown in Unit 4 reinforce the concepts of position and feature modifiers. Virtual size calculations are shown in Unit 5 to lay the ground work for functional gauging, MMB modifiers and calculating position values in the Level 2 training. Unit 6 continues into more complicated datum reference frames and illustrates how datums constrain a part’s degrees of freedom. After this Level 1 training, the student will have a solid grasp on the three major concepts in geometric tolerancing, datum reference frames, position, and profile. With the included units 10 and 11, this program also covers the form and orientation tolerances in depth. See Level 2 for the more advanced topics covered.

Stacks and Analysis Workbook

This workbook covers fundamentals of tolerance stacks, it follows along with the Geometric Tolerancing Stacks and Analysis Program. Tolerance stacks are an important tool for designers, engineers, manufacturing, quality and shop personnel. Tolerance stacks are used to evaluate the variable features and dimensions of a single part or an assembly of parts. There is a variety of stacks and this workbook is divided in units to cover each type separately. These basic principles can be used individually or in combination to complete an evaluation.

The Geometric Tolerancing Stacks Workbook is designed to educate students on performing tolerance stacks and reallocation analysis on linear and axial assemblies. The examples are reinforced with loads of student hands-on exercises in a variety of mechanical case studies on both details and assemblies. The solutions and explanations to the exercises are included so the students may evaluate their skills.

Keep the pictures of the books along with the description. The text had to be rewritten for these other books. This workbook provides simple easy to use common sense formulas to solve the most complex problems. To calculate axial stacks it illustrates the advantages of using the “boundary method” of evaluating joints rather than evaluating mating surfaces covered in the vector method. This boundary method evaluates joints in an assembly and dramatically simplifies the procedure. It cuts in half the process of evaluating tolerance stacks with feature and datum modifiers. The stacks and tolerance allocation become very intuitive and easy to understand. The implication of the MMC, RFS and LMC modifiers are explained and included in the calculations.

Statistical tolerancing is introduced in unit 9. Statistical tolerancing principles can be employed on problems throughout the workbook. The solutions to the stack problems can be found in the solutions section in the rear of the workbook. There is also an Excel stack spreadsheet available that follows along with workbook and automatically calculates the necessary boundaries.

Special feature for instructors/leaders: The pictures in the workbook correspond to and match the Instructor PowerPoint Kit and DVD/Video Series. The instructor/leader can use these materials to provide the students with an exciting/practical hands-on learning experience. The workbook is loaded with student workshop exercises at the end of each chapter. The Geometric Tolerancing Stacks and Analysis Workbook is perfect for schools and corporate in-plant programs. It can be used alone or in conjunction with the other training materials.

A popular presentation is to use the Geo Tol Stacks program and Applications workbook simultaneously. The student would alternately complete a lesson in the Stacks Program and afterwards solve a practical case study problem in the Applications with Stacks Program. This format provides variety in the lessons and practical applications at the same time.

GeoTol Pro Fundamentals Online – Levels 1 & 2

Level 1 and 2 Online Course Details

This Level 1 and 2 Combined program is a full professional level course that provide knowledge on the basics as well as the more advanced concepts of geometric tolerancing. It is delivered per the ASME Y14.5-2009 dimensioning and tolerancing standard and consists of 17 interactive units. This program has been presented and refined over the past 30 years and covers what personnel need to know in order to work in an engineering, manufacturing and quality environment on a daily basis. The program is designed to build knowledge in steps, keeping the students engaged all the way through. This program is great for people new to the subject, those looking for a refresher course, or people who are interested in the more advanced and specialized concepts of geometric tolerancing.

The 90 day access also allows the students to go back and review both the video clips and questions to reinforce the concepts as needed. See the program outline for the topics covered.

Applications with Stacks Workbook

This workbook is designed to educate students on reasonable and proper application of geometric tolerancing to parts and assemblies. It follows along with the Geometric Tolerancing Applications with Stacks Program. The workbook starts out with a quick review of the major concepts of geometric tolerancing and the necessary fastener formulas used to calculate position tolerances. The review also includes examples and illustrations on when to use the feature and datum modifiers MMC, RFS and LMC.

The workbook continues with a series of case study problems the student must solve. The problems consist of practical examples of parts and assemblies that can be found in an industrial environment. The introduction in each case study provides design information and functional requirements about the problem. In the hands-on lessons, students must apply necessary geometric tolerancing to the parts to ensure assembly and functional requirements. This includes the establishment of DRF’s, the relation between the datum features, and the location of all the remaining features to the DRF. The students must also apply any necessary form, orientation, profile, position and runout tolerances. This workbook contains a variety of problems including machinings, sheet metal, plastic applications with a variety of functional design requirements.

The students must also use the fixed and floating fastener formulas to calculate proper mating conditions. The drawings should be complete, including the application of realistic tolerance values in the feature control frames for the given situation and manufacturing concerns. The student should also pay particular attention to the proper selection of MMC, RFS and LMC feature and datum modifiers. The workbook uses geometric tolerancing completely. Plus/minus tolerancing is used only for the size of features and not the location of features.

The Applications with Stacks Workbook has two parts, the application of geometric tolerancing to parts and assemblies and the tolerance stacks evaluation process of those applications. If the student is interested in just the application of geometric tolerancing, the stack problems need not be completed. However, if the student desires to perform any of the stack problems in this program, the knowledge of tolerance stacks is a perquisite. For detailed information on tolerance stacks see the Geometric Tolerancing Stacks and Analysis Workbook by Al Neumann. The Applications with Stacks Workbook contains the case study problems as well as the solutions. It is a excellent reference for applying geometric tolerancing to parts and assemblies.

Special feature for instructors/leaders: The pictures in the workbook correspond to and match the Instructor PowerPoint Kit and DVD/Video Series. Also available is an optional plastic model set. The instructor/leader can use these materials to provide the students with an exciting/practical hands-on learning experience. The workbook is loaded with student workshop exercises. The Geometric Tolerancing Applications with Stacks Workbook is perfect for schools and corporate in-plant programs. It can be used alone as a self study or reference or in conjunction with the other training materials.

A popular presentation is to use the Geometric Tolerancing Stacks and Analysis Workbook and the Geometric Tolerancing Applications with Stacks Workbook simultaneously. The student would alternately complete a lesson in the Stacks book and afterwards solve a practical case study problem in the Applications book. This format provides variety in the lessons and practical applications at the same time.
